TO START:
CLICK anywhere in the GRAY RECTANGLE at the left side of the screen. A Crossword Puzzle grid should appear. If not, see the PROBLEMS section below.

YOUR INTERACTIVE PUZZLE GRID:
Usually, the puzzle grid will come up ready for you to solve word #1 ACROSS. The ACTIVE SQUARE (the one where you will make your guess) is
LIGHT BLUE
The rest of the squares for that word are
YELLOW
[note that colors may vary on some systems]
The CLUE for the ACTIVE WORD is displayed above the puzzle grid -- as well as in the clue list.

TO PLAY:
Put a letter in the ACTIVE SQUARE by typing it on your keyboard.

If your letter is CORRECT, the LIGHT BLUE square will turn
YELLOW
and the ACTIVE SQUARE (LIGHT BLUE) will move on to the next square.

If your letter is WRONG, the LIGHT BLUE square will turn
ORANGE
-- indicating that you are wrong. You can then try a different letter in that square, or move on to a different square. If you DO move on and leave a wrong letter, the square will turn
RED
-- reminding you that you will have to come back and fix it before you're done.

TO MOVE TO A DIFFERENT SQUARE:
There are two different ways...
1) Point at your desired square with your mouse cursor, and then CLICK (some systems may require a DOUBLE CLICK)

or 2) Use the ARROW KEYS to move ACROSS or DOWN

TO PIVOT (or SWITCH) FROM ACROSS to DOWN:
There are three different ways...
1) CLICK your mouse in the square you want to pivot around (some systems may require a DOUBLE CLICK)

or 2) Use the ARROW KEYS to move or pivot

or 3) Use the ENTER key on your keyboard

HINT:
To "erase" an incorrect letter, just use the SPACE BAR on your keyboard.

WANNA CHEAT???
If you are really stuck on a letter and feel a need to cheat, just type letters one at a time until you hit the right letter. Such as...
ABCDEFGHIJ...
-or-
QWERTYUIOP...
Eventually, when you hit the right letter, the ORANGE square will turn YELLOW, and the next BLUE square will appear.
(Nobody will know you cheated -- it's between you and your conscience.)

PRINTING OUT THE PUZZLE GRID
Because we use the Java programming language to achieve our interactivity, there is no way to print out the puzzle grid. (Actually, there is one way, but it is so difficult and time-consuming that you wouldn't want to know.)

PROBLEMS...

First, make sure you are using the right address.
Try http://www.quizland.com/cotd.htm
If you have a puzzle grid that doesn't match the clues, try your REFRESH or RELOAD button.

If you still don't get the puzzle grid, the problem may have to do with Java. Our system currently uses the Java language to get the real-time interactivity. Unfortunately, this means that not everybody is compatible.

You are compatible if you...
1) Have a "Java-capable" browser (such as Netscape version 2.0 or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or higher, or America Online version 2.5 or higher.)
and 2) Have Java "turned on" or not "DISabled" (usually in your SECURITY or PREFERENCES menus)

Java is NOT currently compatible with WebTV or with many Windows 3.1 systems.

If you are using an older, NON-Java, browser, you may be able to download and use a new one FOR FREE. Try http://www.microsoft.com.
